1. We are currently celebrating the Finnish Design Year 2005 and there will be a special Design Day in the autumn. Have you noticed this at school and how?

Last year in Arts we had to design a functional utility item for an international competition. We visited the Design Museum Helsinki then.

2. Why do you think it might be important to tell about design at school?

Well, then more people would be interested in that field. Probably we'd start to appreciate more everyday design. For example designing scissors must be hard as you have to consider both their looks and practicality.

3. What do you know about design studies and the work of designers? Could you consider working as a designer?

The work of a designer is creative. Designers probably work in groups to get the best possible result. One always speaks about ergonomics in connection with design. I guess it means that for instance a chair should be such that though you sit in it for a long time your back won't hurt. I don't think I will ever work in design because I'm not creative enough.

4. How does design influence your life and surroundings? Give a few examples!

Design affects almost everything I do. Like if I'm talking on a phone, someone has designed the keys in such a way, that they are easy to punch. Or when I cut bread, someone has designed the knife so that the blade and the handle have the same weight, which makes the cutting easy.

5. What item would you buy because of its design?

The Pallo (Ball) chair [by Eero Aarnio]. I think it looks funny and it's very comfortable to sit in.
